When I was a kid, I used to love looking at the New York Subway Map. First of all, the great thing about it was it was free. You could go up to the token booth, ask for a map, and the man in the booth (it was always a man in the ’60s) would give it to you. For an 8-year-old, that was the greatest thing in the world.
I lived in Brooklyn. We had an aunt in Harlem and my grandmother was in Queens. And I used to obsess on finding out the fastest way to get from my house to theirs. At one point, I had to take the subway from the Bronx to get to school in Brooklyn. I was about 10-years-old then. Parents had no problem letting their kids go from one end of the city to another back then.
Anyway, what inspires this riff is an interactive NYC subway map that shows how the system developed from 1892 to 2007.
I can spend hours looking at this. I remember when some of these lines didn’t exist.
